03/24/09 - Rob Locke, a former global vice president of W.R. Grace & Co. testified on behalf of the prosecution in a lawsuit about their active concealment of the dangers of asbestos exposure which came from their insulation products. Formerly a large construction materials company, Grace & Co. operated a vermiculite mine in Libby, Montana which produced raw materials used in insulation, fireproofing, and potting soil. Locke testified that in 1976, tests were done using hamsters exposed to the vermiculite, 10 of which died of mesothelioma. Locke circulated a memo advising the head of the construction products division that he was concerned about the test results. In another memo from 1976, Locke relayed the results of a test where vermiculite was picked up, and dropped with varying speeds inside a large airplane hangar. The study found that microscopic asbestos fibers traveled throughout the entire hangar, and that there was no effective way to stop it from spreading. Locke did not accept an offer of immunity from the prosecution, though he was warned that his testimony could be used against him in a criminal action. Locke further described how W.R. Grace discussed selling the asbestos products in other markets such as Latin America, because of their lack of regulation of construction materials. Read the Bloomberg.com article...
