Asbestos Law Firms

Spotlight on mesothelioma lawsuits

Asbestos law firms fight for their clients

Asbestos law firms cannot reverse the course of mesothelioma disease, but they are able to fight for the rights of victims and families and help them gain the just financial compensation they deserve.

In the United States, between 2,000 and 3,000 new cases of mesothelioma are reported each year. Victims can be exposed to asbestos as long as 50 years ago, primarily in the workplace but also secondhand. The New York asbestos law firm Seeger Weiss knows that too often these workers’ employers knew of the dangers of asbestos and failed to alert their employees.

Recent court proceedings handled by asbestos law firms

New Jersey

In February 2008, a New Jersey court ordered General Motors and other defendants to pay $30.3 million to the family of a New Jersey man who died of mesothelioma at age 50. The victim was believed to have been exposed as a young boy to asbestos from the clothing worn by his father and brother, both of whom worked for GM.

This is just one of many cases where a qualified asbestos law firm has proven to a jury that secondhand asbestos exposure is dangerous and that a company that knowingly put workers and families at risk is responsible for damages.

United Kingdom

In May 2009, the widow of a mesothelioma victim in the U.K. received a record settlement (for that region) £1.4 million or $2,223,337 U.S. dollars, one of the highest compensation awards in a mesothelioma case. The lawsuit claimed that the victim was exposed to asbestos while working as an engineer in the late 1980’s. The lawsuit stated that this was how he developed an asbestos related tumor, which caused his death at the tragically young age of 47.

In this case, after admitting liability, the victim’s former employer settled for the £1.4 million award that would provide for the victim’s surviving family. Asbestos law firms are aggressive in getting due compensation for their clients.

San Francisco

A California man was awarded $7.5 million in a mesothelioma lawsuit some 36 years after he was last knowingly exposed to asbestos. Between 1963 and 1972, the victim, who was 64 years old when he was diagnosed in 2008, worked as a janitor for a civilian company and as a machinist in a U.S. Navy shipyard in the San Francisco area.

As with many cases handled by an experienced asbestos law firm, this trial did not drag on, concluding within two weeks. The $7.5 million settlement is one of the highest ever reached in a California court.

These cases show that a qualified asbestos law firm can fight for the rights of mesothelioma victims and win. While the result of your individual case will vary from those described here, a skilled asbestos law firm will always litigate aggressively on your behalf.
