New Jersey Asbestos

Symptoms of Malignant Mesothelioma

In every known mesothelioma case in New Jersey, asbestos is believed to be the culprit

While several types of mesothelioma cancers exist, by far the most common is pleural mesothelioma, which affects the lung lining, or pleura, and accounts for 70 percent of cases. In New Jersey, asbestos exposure has been a huge concern. Many who have worked around this substance have fallen prey to pleural mesothelioma and other less common forms of the disease.

Peritoneal mesothelioma (affecting the abdominal lining) and pericardial mesothelioma (a rare form that affects the lining around the heart) together account for most of the remaining 30 percent of cases. If you live in New Jersey, asbestos exposure from a variety of sources may produce mesothelioma and the symptoms discussed below.

Symptoms

Initial symptoms often mimic those of other illnesses. Diagnosis may be delayed as physicians “treat” the suspected condition. Symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include:

  • shortness of breath
  • dry cough
  • pain when breathing or coughing
  • pain felt below the rib cage
  • lumps on your chest beneath the skin
  • fever
  • night sweats
  • weight loss for no obvious reason

A chest X-ray will usually reveal “pleural effusion,” a buildup of fluid between the linings covering the chest wall and the lungs. In 60 percent of cases, only the right lung is affected. Both lungs are involved in just five percent of known cases.

Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma typically include:

  • pain in the abdominal area
  • abdominal swelling
  • frequent diarrhea or constipation, or other changes in bowel habits
  • lumps in the abdominal area
  • nausea
  • swollen feet
  • weight loss for no obvious reason

According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma and another form, tunica vaginalis, are still unclear as these forms of the disease are extremely rare.
