New York

New York is a our nation’s third most populated state and home to New York City, the nation’s largest and most densely populated city with over eight million people. Often New York is referred to as “New York State” in order to differentiate it from New York City. While New York City is famous as a one of the world’s global hubs for business and commerce, New York State is also known as a national leader in economic industry.

Early New York

Early on, New York played an important role in the American Revolution with about a third of all military battles taking place there including the largest of the war. In the early 1800s, New York Governor DeWitt Clinton pushed for construction of the Erie Canal connecting the Hudson River to Lake Erie. This effort opened up vast areas of New York to commerce and settlement. Commerce was strengthened between New York and the Great Lakes region by way of shipping using the Erie Canal system. As a result, New York Great Lake port cities such as Buffalo and Rochester were able to grow and prosper.

While improved shipping and transportation helped strengthen New York’s economy and allowed commerce to thrive with areas westward, New York’s ports continued to harbor ships from overseas. By the end of the 1800s, New York’s Ellis Island was serving as the main facility for immigrants entering the United States. With large immigration, the racial and ancestral makeup of New York continued to diversity. Today, estimates place about one-fifth of the population in New York as being foreign-born.

Population centers in New York continued to grow over the years as immigrants came to the United States. Likewise, immigration and population growth motivated New York’s transportation systems to expand. In the late 1800s, the first underground transit system was built in New York City. While elevated transportation lines were present in New York City in the late 1800s, weather showed that underground lines were superior. Accordingly, by the early part of the 1900s, the first underground subway was opened in New York City.

New York Today

With growth in population and transportation systems, New York’s commerce has expanded. In the 1800s, the Erie Canal supported agricultural production and the transporting of products to Great Lake shipping ports. Today, agriculture continues to be an important part of New York’s economy. As New York and its large cities have grown, other industries have found their footprint in New York’s economy including printing and publishing, scientific instruments, and tourism. New York has also seen growth in industries including machinery, chemical products, and electrical equipment.
